How to Make Herbal Preparations: Teas, Tinctures, Oils and Salves

Take one herb and prepare it seven different ways, and you do not get seven versions of the same medicine. You get seven different extracts, because each method reaches a different set of compounds. Water pulls out one group. Alcohol reaches further. Fat reaches compounds that neither water nor alcohol will touch. And a capsule extracts nothing at all until your own digestion does the work.
That is the whole argument of this module, and it is the thing most beginner herbal books skip. Choosing a preparation is not a matter of preference or convenience. It is a chemistry decision, and it starts with two questions: what part of the plant are you working with, and what kind of compound are you trying to get out of it?
Start here: matching the material to the method

Tougher plant structures need more force to give up what is inside them. That single principle explains most of what follows.
Water: infusions, decoctions and syrups
An infusion is the simplest preparation there is — hot water poured over plant material, usually leaves or flowers, and steeped. Heat water just off the boil, pour, cover, steep 5–15 minutes depending on the herb, strain.
Steep time is not only about taste. Different compound classes behave differently in hot water: some, like many flavonoids and tannins, extract readily and keep building the longer you steep. Others, especially delicate volatile oils, can degrade or evaporate with excess heat or time. Same herb, same water, steeped three minutes versus fifteen, gives a genuinely different balance of what ends up in the cup.
Cover the cup. Volatile aromatic compounds escape readily in steam, and covering measurably preserves more of them. That is extraction chemistry, not folklore.
A decoction is a simmer, not a steep. Roots, bark or seeds go into water and are actively simmered, typically 20–40 minutes, then strained. Twenty to forty minutes of simmering is not overcooking a tea — for tough material it is often the only way to get to what is inside.
A syrup usually begins as a strong decoction or infusion, with honey or sugar dissolved in at significant proportion. It is more palatable, which matters for bitter or strong herbs. The sweetener is not only for taste: at sufficient concentration it genuinely helps preserve the preparation by limiting the water available for microbial growth. That is food science. It is also not unlimited — syrups still have real shelf-life limits.
Alcohol, and the two real alternatives
A tincture is plant material extracted in alcohol — the menstruum, in herbalist terms — typically steeped for weeks, then strained into a concentrated, shelf-stable liquid taken in small amounts.
The alcohol is not there to intoxicate anyone. A typical dose is a few millilitres, often diluted further in water. It is there because it dissolves compounds that water alone cannot reach.
Alcohol percentage is not arbitrary either. Different compound classes need different concentrations to extract efficiently, which is why serious tincture-making specifies a target percentage rather than "whatever is in the cupboard."
Two genuine alcohol-free alternatives exist:
- A glycerite uses vegetable glycerin. Sweeter, gentler, genuinely alcohol-free — but it does not extract quite as broad a range of compounds, and it has a shorter shelf life.
- An oxymel combines vinegar, an effective solvent for certain compounds, with honey to balance the sharpness. A distinctly old preparation style, well suited to particular herbs.
None of the three wins categorically. Tincture: broadest extraction, longest shelf life, contains alcohol. Glycerite: alcohol-free, sweeter, shorter shelf life, narrower extraction. Oxymel: alcohol-free, distinct sour-sweet profile. The right choice depends on the herb, the compound you are after, and your own constraints — including whether alcohol is something you need to avoid entirely.
The one that extracts nothing
Every method above involves a solvent. A capsule involves none. No water, no alcohol, no heat — you are the extraction process, by way of your own digestion.
A powder is dried plant material ground fine, and it is the base form behind both capsules and tablets rather than a different substance. The misconception worth killing here: a capsule is not automatically stronger or more concentrated. It is raw powder in a shell, for convenience and to mask taste. Capsule size physically limits how much fits — a standard "00" capsule holds roughly half a gram, so an effective multi-gram amount means several capsules, not one. Tablets are powder compressed under pressure, usually with a binder to hold shape, which allows somewhat more material per unit at the cost of an added inactive ingredient.
The real tradeoff is that no pre-extraction step controls what actually gets absorbed. Your digestive system does that work, and how efficiently it does it varies from person to person — so effect and absorption can be less predictable than with a tincture or a tested standardised extract, even at an identical labelled amount.
Fat: infused oils and salves
Infused oil and essential oil are constantly confused, and they are not interchangeable. An essential oil is a distilled, highly concentrated volatile-compound extract. An infused oil is a much more dilute whole-oil preparation, made by steeping plant material in a carrier oil such as olive or sunflower and letting fat-soluble compounds migrate in.
Oil earns its place because some plant compounds are fat-soluble rather than water-soluble. They do not migrate well into water, alcohol or vinegar at all.
Two methods: slow or solar infusion, where plant material and oil sit together in a warm spot for weeks, or heat-assisted infusion using gentle low heat for hours instead. It is the same speed-versus-gentleness tradeoff as infusion versus decoction.
A salve or balm is that infused oil solidified with a thickening agent — almost always beeswax — into a semi-solid, spreadable form. Same compounds, different texture, applied topically. Warm the infused oil gently, add beeswax at roughly a 1-to-4 ratio by weight as a starting point, stir until combined, pour, and let it set. The beeswax ratio is purely a texture decision; get it wrong and you have made a formulation mistake, not a safety one.
Topical application does remove some risk categories, but not all of them. Some herbs applied to skin carry real risk of irritation, allergic reaction, or photosensitivity — increased skin reaction to sunlight after application. Topical is a lower-risk category in general. It is not a risk-free one.
The safety point that outranks the technique
Fresh, moist plant material submerged in oil creates a low-oxygen, low-acid environment in which Clostridium botulinum spores can grow. Garlic is the most documented example. This is not theoretical: a 1985 outbreak in Vancouver sickened 37 people from exactly this kind of garlic-in-oil preparation.
The standard safe practices are to use thoroughly dried plant material rather than fresh; or, if using fresh material, to acidify it properly, refrigerate the finished oil, and use it within a short window rather than storing it at room temperature.

Shelf life, storage and the unlabelled jar
A properly made alcohol tincture can outlast the person who made it. A fresh-herb syrup might not survive the season. Rough industry-consensus ranges — planning figures, not lab-precise numbers:

Three factors do most of the damage: light — use amber or opaque containers; heat — store somewhere cool and stable; and moisture, which drives microbial growth and is exactly why fully drying material and using airtight containers matter.
None of it means anything on an unlabelled jar. Every preparation should carry, at minimum: the herb's common and botanical name, the plant part used, the preparation date, and the method or menstruum used. That is the only way any shelf-life estimate is still usable six months from now.
