How Pure Herbal Wisdom Rates Evidence: The Confidence Scale

Pure Herbal Wisdom — Herbalism 101, Lesson 30 (Module 5 Finale)

Six lessons — how to read a study, systematic reviews, why studies disagree, dosage specificity, product quality, headline distortion. All of it compresses into four words you're about to see on every herb profile for the rest of this course, and every future Deep Dive episode: the Confidence Scale.

Emerging — mechanism-level or traditional-use evidence only, no human trials yet. Preliminary — early human evidence exists, but small, short, or unreplicated. Moderate — multiple human trials, reasonably consistent, but not yet synthesized into a systematic review, or carrying real limitations. Strong — systematic review or meta-analysis level evidence, consistent findings, adequate sample sizes and durations, low product-quality concern.

This isn't a vibe rating — every tier traces directly to specific lessons: Emerging draws on Lesson 24's in vitro/animal studies and Lesson 29's mechanism-only findings. Preliminary reflects Lesson 26's sample-size and duration limits. Moderate accounts for the disagreement patterns in Lesson 26 and the funding considerations in Lesson 28. Strong sits at the top of Lesson 25's hierarchy — ideally independently funded, on verified products per Lesson 28.

One critical distinction: this scale rates evidence for effectiveness. It says nothing on its own about safety. An herb can carry a "Strong" effectiveness rating and still require real caution — which is why Lesson 5's 5-category safety checklist is always run separately, never replaced by this scale.

That closes Module 5 — the signature module of this entire course. Seven lessons that turned you from someone who reads headlines into someone who can actually evaluate a claim. Everything from here forward, starting with Module 6, gets run through exactly this lens.
