Ginger contains well over 100 identified compounds — some analyses put the number above 200. Almost every marketing claim about ginger names one, maybe two.
Six constituent classes matter across herbalism: alkaloids (nitrogen-containing, often potent — sometimes the line between medicine and poison), flavonoids (widespread antioxidant-associated pigments), glycosides (a sugar attached to an active compound — digoxin, from foxglove, is one), tannins (the astringent compounds in strong tea), essential oils/terpenes (volatile, aromatic compounds), and polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates, some studied for immune activity). In ginger specifically, gingerols and shogaols are the most-studied of its many constituents.
You'll hear "entourage effect" or "synergy" constantly — the idea that a plant's compounds work better together than any isolated one alone. It's real in some specific, studied cases. It's also one of the most overused, under-evidenced words in herbal marketing, precisely because it's nearly impossible to casually disprove.
One more subtlety: a compound being present doesn't mean it's present at a clinically meaningful dose in whatever you're actually taking. "Contains compound X" and "delivers an effective dose of compound X" are different claims — which is exactly why Module 5 exists.
